We only install professional grade screened stainless steel or copper caps with lifetime warranties.
Hardware store galvanized caps will rust through and need to be replaced on a regular basis, some as often as every 1-2 years. In addition the rust stains left on chimneys from these caps cannot be removed, even with acid washing.
Stone caps have a tendency to crack and fall, damaging the chimney and/or roof. The supporting stacks are usually made of brick and they deteriorate, which can also cause the stone to fall. Finally it is difficult or impossible to clean the flue from the top of the chimney, which is how most woodstove and furnace flues are cleaned. Therefore we do not install or recommend stone caps.
